Jaguar Cars continued their competitive racing pedigree with their Lightweight E Type which had been born out of their record-breaking legendary C Types & D Type aluminium race cars with numerous successful wins in Le Man’s 24-hour endurance races in the 1950s.

Sir William Lyons launched the 150mph – road going E Type to the world in March 1961 at the Geneva Motor Show & only a Month Later with its racing debut at Oulton Park in April 1961 Graham Hill celebrated winning the Grand Touring class for production sports cars driving chassis no: 850005.

It was stongly rumoured that Jaguar Cars would now return to racing with their 150mph – road going E Type & especially with the FIA’s – change of ruling for GT Class Manufacturers Championship for 1963 many at the time thought that this was a real possiiblity.

However Jaguar decided not to return to the racing circuit & all 12 made were sold to their preferred privateer racing teams so they could compete & campaign at their own expense.

The core component of the Lightweight – E Type is its aluminium bodyshell enabling Jaguar Cars to reduce the kerb weight by 114kg compared to their standard road-going steel bodied E Type.

Jaguar Cars aluminium Lightweight – used the underpinning of their successful winning D Type both in it structure having a aluminium monocoque body & bonnet, with steel space frames & using their D Type race prepared engine to create a very competitive race car with a mechanical Lucas fuel injection system & a wide-angle head, which was capable of producing well in excess of 300bhp plus & proved to be a formidable racing machine form the start, with several successful wins in endurance races recorded.

All of the original 12 Lightweights have survived & are highly sought with all now in the hands of private collectors, & rarely if ever offered for sale, sell for millions of pounds usually by a private treaty agreement & they remain a testament to Jaguar’s racing heritage.
