$142 million dollar (£115 million pound) for the Most Expensiv Car in the World
Mercedes have set a new world record in the collectors car market in May 2022 with $142 million dollar (£115 million pound) sale of one of their two 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupes they have owned from new & having been in their collection for 67 years.
They invited 10 collectors to RB Sotheby’s auction to bid for their Red interior 1955 Mercedes-Benz with just 6,045km recorded with Mercedes retaining the Blue interior 300SL in their collection.
Based on the W 196 R Grand Prix car, which won several world championships at the hands of Juan Manuel Fangio, the 300 SLR was designed by Rudolf Uhlenhaut & carries his name which was never actually raced but was instead used for practice and as Uhlenhaut’s personal transportation to events.
Powered by a 3.0 liter straight-eight engine producing 302 horsepower, with 0-60mph in just 6.9sec, with a top speed of 176.47mph, as tested by Autocar in 1956.
Simon Kidston placed the winning bid on behalf of an unnamed British client, after lobbying Mercedes-Benz’s board of directors to sell the race car for some 18-months arrived at the auction on May 5th, 2022, in the 300SL Gullwing that his father had purchased new in 1955.
